War Memorial Park

February 19, 2009

In January, several local baseball enthusiasts approached Altavista Town Council about restoring the baseball field and stadium at War Memorial Park.  Citizens for Altavista Baseball raised a significant amount of money and asked the Town to match what was raised.  At their February 10th meeting, Town Council approved the work and matched the money raised by the Citizens for Altavista Baseball.  On February 11th, phase one began with the installation of irrigation and infield sod.  Further plans in phase one call for new dugouts and a new sound system.  On behalf of all the members of our baseball program, we would like to thank Citizens for Altavista Baseball, the Town of Altavista, and numerous volunteers who will assist in the completion of these projects.

Shown below are several photos before work began and photos that show the progress made with the irrigation and installation of infield sod.  Click on the pictures below to enlarge.

Improvements have begun to the playing field at War Memorial Park.  Sod has been laid and a new layer of infield dirt will be added prior to the season.  Photographs showing the improvements are below.  The baseball program would like to thank the Town of Altavista for allowing these improvements to be made to their facility.  Additionally, The Colonel Club, the Altavista Athletic Department, and the Altavista Area YMCA need to be recognized for their support.  Bass Sod Farms in Gladys provided the sod and Luck Stone Corporation of Richmond will be supplying the infield dirt.
